Trump administration gives TikTok ban a new November 27 deadline

The Trump administration’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States has given TikTok a new deadline to sell its US division, but the early November court order thwarting the ban still stands.

President Trump’s court order to get rid of TikTok now has a deadline on Nov. 27. However, according to The Verge, that deadline does not seem to be enforced, given that the ruling of two weeks ago still applies. The US Department of Commerce, which would impose restrictions on TikTok in terms of hosting, among other things, tells The Wall Street Journal to also await further lawsuits.

An alternative to a TikTok spin-off would be a takeover of the American division by an American company. The government would agree with that, it has stated. A deal with Walmart and Oracle was well advanced, but TikTok says it has had “no feedback for a while” on that process.

President Trump wrote in a decree in August that there is “ credible evidence ” that Chinese TikTok parent company ByteDance “ may take action that threatens to harm the national security of the United States. The president then gave ByteDance a sales deadline of 90 days after publication of that decree. This gave the Chinese company until November 12 to divest its American TikTok division.
