Upcoming Pixel smartphones cannot store unlimited photos for free
Only the current generations of Pixel smartphones can save photos and videos in high quality without limit via Google Photos. This function will disappear for future models that Google will introduce. Google confirms that.
Future Pixel smartphones will also not be able to make unlimited backups of photos with Google Photos with the ‘high quality’ option, Google confirms that opposite Android Police. Google announced on Wednesday that it would stop unlimited storage of photos at ‘high quality’ from 1 June next year. With that option, Google compresses photos.
Google said that the Pixel 1 to 5 smartphones were excluded and that users therefore retain the option to backup images in high quality, without limit. Although Google explicitly speaks of a ‘Pixel 5 or earlier’, it was not clear whether upcoming Pixel models would get the option, but that turns out not to be the case.
The unlimited photo storage was one of the advantages that Google emphasized with previous Pixel generations. With the Pixel models prior to the Pixel 4, users could even temporarily or permanently upload unlimited photos and videos in original quality, without any form of compression. With the Pixel 3, Google did report that this was a function that remained available until June 31, 2022, with the Pixel 2 it was a period of four years. The Pixel 1 did have unlimited storage of photos in original quality for an indefinite period of time, user TheFes emphasizes.
