BMW unveils design of electric iX SUV with target range of 600km or more
BMW has unveiled the design of the electric iX, an SUV roughly the length of the existing X5 SUV and the height of an X6. The German manufacturer does not yet give many definitive specifications, but does talk about making a range of more than 600 km possible.
The iX won’t be released until the end of next year, but BMW is already presenting the car’s design, which evolved from the earlier Vision iNEXT concept. The manufacturer states that the goal of the iX is to enable an ‘exceptionally low combined energy demand in its segment’, namely ‘less than 21kWh per 100km’.
With a battery capacity of more than 100kWh, a range of more than 600km would be possible under the European WLTP standard, according to BMW. Whether the car will actually achieve this range when it is released at the end of next year and will receive a battery with such a capacity is still unknown. BMW also takes a close look by stating that the stated values for the energy requirement and the range are based on the current state of the development of the car.
Via direct current the iX could charge with a power of up to 200kW, but BMW is not certain here either. The company does not therefore promise that drivers will actually be able to fast charge with 200 kW. If that is achieved, the battery will be able to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 40 minutes. And after ten minutes of charging, there should be enough range again to cover a distance of 120km. Charging the battery from 0 to 100 percent with AC power takes eleven hours, assuming 11kW of charging power.
The car must have a power of more than 370kW or 500 hp, but the exact power is not yet reported by BMW. The sprint from 0 to 100 km / h must be completed in less than 5 seconds. The weight is still unknown, as is the price.
