Broadcom sues Netflix for alleged patent infringement
Chip manufacturer Broadcom has sued Netflix because, according to the hardware maker, the streaming service infringes on patented technologies. Broadcom wants reasonable compensation for this.
Broadcom does not state an amount, but is asking for “reasonable royalties,” according to the indictment, which Variety has put online. Netflix has not yet responded to the complaint of the chipmaker, which previously sued makers of TVs and was not proven right.
The patent infringements concern, among other things, the h.265 encoding of streams, the indictment claims. It concerns a total of five patents from Broadcom, including this one. The company has filed suit in a court in southern California.
Broadcom says it reached out to Netflix in September last year to reach an agreement, but those talks have come to nothing. Broadcom has requested a jury trial.
