LG comes with a 5.3″ smartphone screen with wafer-thin bezels

LG has announced an LCD panel for smartphones with a screen bezel of 0.7mm, thinner than the thickness of a credit card. According to the manufacturer, this is the thinnest screen bezel to date. The resolution of the 5.3″ panel is 1920×1080 pixels.

LG Display, the LG business unit that makes LCD panels, among other things, developed the screen. The group uses a production method that it calls Neo Edge. LG uses glue instead of double-sided tape to attach the electronics and backlight and to seal them along the edges.

With no plastic part to attach the panel and backlight, Neo Edge technology ensures bezels with minimal thickness, while LG claims to prevent light leaks at the same time. According to LG Display, the screen is also dust and waterproof. The manufacturer would also prevent rust by using glue.

In addition, the panels use LG’s Advanced In-Cell Touch technology. LG integrates the touch layer into the LCD module, which makes the panel thinner and allows the screen edge to decrease further. LG has been using this technology for two years.

The Korean group will start mass production of the new 5.3″ panels in November. Manufacturers in China will receive the first batch because, according to LG, the “demand for large screens is very high”.
