HBO and Sony to make TV series of The Last of Us
HBO has teamed up with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions on a TV series of The Last of Us. Employees of Naughty Dog, the studio that develops the games, contribute to the content of the series.
Craig Mazin is responsible for adapting the games to the TV series, according to Hollywood Reporter. He previously made the Chernobyl series. He will be collaborating with Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director at Naughty Dog for The Last of Us games. The president of Naughty Dog will co-produce the series. Naughty Dog confirms teaming up with HBO on the series.
It is the first TV series from PlayStation Productions. That Sony production company was set up in 2018 to film PlayStation titles and is working on the Uncharted film, among other things. Plans to film that game date back to 2008 and the film should be released in 2021.
The Last of Us was released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and a remaster in 2014 for Playstation 4. A total of 17 million copies were sold and the action-adventure game was particularly praised for its emotional story. The Last of Us II, which builds on the events of the first part with the same main characters, will be released at the end of May. Details about the upcoming TV series are not yet available.
