Rhino Software released version 6.4.0.0 of Serv-U yesterday. This small and easy-to-use ftp server software is suitable for home and professional use. The software can be tried as a Corporate Edition for the first thirty days. During that time there is an unlimited number of configurable domains, users per domain and simultaneous connections, and the possibility to set up secure connections (SSL/TLS). After that, the program continues as Personal Edition with somewhat limited functionality, such as a maximum of one domain, two simultaneous connections and five user accounts, among others. The main change in version 6.4.0.0 has happened ‘under the hood’. Rhino Software now no longer uses version 2003 but version 2005 of Microsoft Developer Studio, which means, among other things, that Windows 9x and NT are no longer supported. The full changelog for this release is as follows:

Changes in Serv-U 6.4.0.0:

  • Converted help files to Windows CHM (Compiled HTML Help) files for Windows Vista compatibility. Microsoft eliminated WinHlp32.exe (Windows Help) support in Windows Vista.
  • Upgraded development environment from Microsoft Developer Studio 2003 to Microsoft Developer Studio 2005. Microsoft changes and additions here address certain Windows and MFC security issues.
  • Added the ability to disable SSL version 2 (SSLv2).
  • Windows 98, 98 SE, ME, and NT 4.0 are no longer supported. Microsoft has discontinued support for these operating systems and no longer provides DLLs and libraries to developers that are compatible on these operating systems.
