Yesterday version 0.8 beta of vLite was released, the Windows Vista brother of nLite. With this program it is possible to customize a Windows Vista installation DVD to your own taste. For example, components that will not be used can be removed, drivers and patches can be added and some tweaks can be applied and settings that you intend to make afterwards. The result is reduced installation time and smoother running Windows Vista. With this new release, it’s possible to strip down the 32-bit version of Vista to fit on a CD, while still retaining nearly all the functionality of a full Windows XP installation. The machine it was then released on had 600MB less memory in use and the installation was a whopping 5GB smaller. Despite the fact that these were extreme settings, this is still an impressive achievement. The changelog for this release shows the following changes:

New:

  • Merge SWM parts into a WIM (convert Vista CDs into a DVD)
  • Disable AntiSpyware Realtime Protection (tweak)
  • Substitute common fonts with Segoe UI (tweak)
  • ‘Internet Information Services (IIS)’
  • ‘Super Fetch’
  • ‘Windows Aero Theme’
  • ‘Natural Language’
  • ‘Ready Boost’
  • ‘BitLocker Drive Encryption’
  • Parental Controls

updated:

  • Faster image rebuilding (no extraction)
  • Photo Viewer separated from the Photo Gallery

Fixed:

  • Overlay video playback, codecs issue
  • Defender listed on Windows Update when removed
  • Various burning page issues
  • Tablet PC (Office 2007 dependency)
