Nikon has released new firmware for its D3 DSLR. The control software has arrived at version 2.00 and can be used for Windows (1.59MB) and Mac OS X (7.50MB) to be downloaded. Nikon’s developers have made a laundry list of improvements. For example, the autofocus and automatic white balance have been improved, photos shot in portrait orientation are now rotated when the ‘Rotate portrait’ menu option is enabled, and it is possible to adjust the aperture when shooting in live view mode with Camera Control Pro 2 . The full list of changes in firmware 2.00 is as follows:

Version 2.00 includes the following improvements

  • The autofocus has been improved.
  • The automatic white balance has been improved.
  • Images captured with Rotate portrait in the playback menu set to On will not rotate automatically when displayed immediately after shooting (image review mode).
  • The following changes and additions have been made to the Custom Functions menu f4: Assign FUNC button > FUNC button + dials, f5: Assign preview button > Preview + command dials, and f6: Assign AE-L/AF-L button > AE- L/AF-L + command dials: The Choose image area option is split into two options: Choose image area (FX/DX/5:4) and Choose image area (FX/DX). A new option has been added to the Memory Bank Shooting Menu item.
  • When Choose image area (FX/DX/5:4) or Choose image area (FX/DX) is selected and the function (Fn) button is pressed, the image area setting is displayed in the top control panel, in shooting display, and below in the viewfinder.
  • The Copyright information option has been added to the setup menu. When Copyright information is on, the copyright symbol (©) is displayed in the shooting information display.
  • Recent settings can now be displayed instead of My menu.
  • The virtual horizon can now be displayed with the image in live view mode.
  • The vignetting correction setting can now be checked in the shooting information.
  • The Vignette control option in the shooting menu now supports all types G and D lenses, except DX and PC lenses.
  • The vignette control value is optimized for shots with Active D-Lighting enabled in the shooting menu.
  • The electronic analog exposure indicators are now shown in the control panel and shooting information display while the exposure compensation setting is applied.
  • The High ISO NR setting can now be verified in the shooting information display while applying the High ISO NR option in the shooting menu.
  • The FX format icon for the Choose image area setting has changed.
  • Ankara, Riyadh, Kuwait and Manama have been added to the Time Zone options for the World Time item in the setup menu.
  • If a GPS device is used and compass heading information is not available, —.–° is now displayed for the Position > Compass heading option in the GPS section of the setup menu.
  • When shooting in live view mode with Camera Control Pro 2 (version 2.2.0 or later) and a PC-E lens, aperture can now be adjusted from the computer.
  • The issue that in rare cases caused the battery indicator to blink regardless of the actual battery charge level has been resolved.
  • Errors in the German help screens have been corrected.
