Ring Enables Mandatory Two-Step Authentication on All Accounts

Users of Ring devices are now required to log in with two-factor authentication on the corresponding accounts. The option was already available, but was not enabled by default.

Ring says it requires two-step authentication to make it difficult for third parties to view camera images. Due to the decision, malicious parties can no longer log in with only the username and password. By requiring two-step authentication, users whose data is in the wrong hands will also be able to see when someone tries to log in to the account on a new device. Ring does not support authentication apps or hardware keys. The two-step authentication works with a code that is sent via email or SMS.

Furthermore, Ring is adapting its Control Center software. This includes an option in which users can indicate that they do not want to share data with third parties for the display of personalized advertisements. Ring will also temporarily stop sharing data with analytics services. There must be an opt-out button for that.

Ring is an Amazon company and best known for its smart doorbell with a built-in camera. The company has been the subject of much controversy in recent months. In December, passwords of thousands of users appeared online. Because two-step authentication was not mandatory, many cameras could be viewed in this way. Employees were also found to have abused their access to camera images in recent years.
