In open source land there is an alternative or two for everything. When you say open source Instant Message client, you quickly say GAIM. KDE’s Kopete is, incorrectly, less often thought of. The two programs are more or less similar in structure, both use a plugin interface that provides the software with support for networks such as Jabber, ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GaduGadu and IRC. However, GAIM has to do without support for Windows LANs and SMS, which Kopete can happily chat with.

Yesterday there is a new version of Kopete on the Website from the KDE project. Among other things, the update fixes support for Yahoo. Two versions are available, 0.8 RC1 for those who like to stay on top of developments and number 0.7.5 for those who prefer stability and security over new features. We are also told that we will find the final release of version 0.8 in the release of KDE 3.2. The changelog for both versions is as follows:

  • Fix the yahoo login bug
  • Changes to URL Handling
  • Bug fixes in the Winpopup plugin
