Action RPG Genshin Impact raised $ 100 million in two weeks
The free-to-play RPG Genshin Impact generated $ 100 million in revenue within two weeks of its release, according to analysts. The game was created by the Chinese developer miHoYo and is available worldwide on various platforms.
According to game analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, Genshin Impact has generated $ 100 million in revenue in less than two weeks. The free-to-play game is according to the analyst particularly popular in China, Japan, South Korea and the United States. The game was created by the Chinese studio miHoYo and the development and marketing budget was $ 100 million, according to South China Morning Post. Those costs would have already been recouped.
A week after its release, the game would have already grossed $ 50 million and the mobile version would have been downloaded 17 million times in four days of release. Before the game was available, 20 million people had signed up through the app stores, reports Ahmad.
Genshin Impact was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, Android and iOS at the end of September and a version for the Nintendo Switch is in the works. There is cross save functionality between the PC version and the mobile versions. So players can take their progression with them on different devices. That does not apply to the PS4 version.
The game is often compared to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild because of the use of cel shaded graphics. Just like that game, Genshin Impact is an open-world RPG with a storyline. The game is free to download and play, but includes in-game purchases. Through the microtransactions, players can obtain better fighters, weapons and items, Kotaku describes, among other things.
Genshin Impact is well rated by both players and reviewers. On Metacritic, the PC version has a score of 83 points and users give the game a 7.7. According to various reviews, the in-game purchases are not necessary to play the game properly. PCGamer writes in its review that the game does not “pressure” players to make purchases.
The Washington Post is more critical of this, writing that players who are sensitive to gambling can quickly spend a lot of money in the game. Since the game is developed in China, the developer must indicate the odds of winning to obtain certain items. These percentages can be seen in the ‘fine print’ in the Wish menu.
