Firefox 2.0 – also known as ‘Bon Echo’ – is a cross platform open source browser for the Internet and includes a number of new features and improvements over the current Firefox 1 series, such as each tab having a separate close button. The developers have also improved the support of extensions and the 2.0 series is equipped with Googles Safe Browsing extension, which should protect against phishing sites. In addition, the browser is equipped with features such as the bookmark software microsummaries and does Firefox support ‘client side session and persistent storage‘.

Mozilla’s ftp server just released the third release candidate appeared from Mozilla Firefox 2.0. This version can be downloaded for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. For the self-builders and developers among us there is also the source code available, with which you can bake your own variant of the new Firefox or take a look at the code. What the changes are in the new Firefox 2.0 release is not known. The first final version of the 2.0 branch is expected sometime at the end of this month and early next month.

Update: Mozilla developers now have the release notes published and the people who have signed up to the Firefox press-list have been notified about Mozilla Firefox 2.0 RC3 via email. These release notes look the same as the previous two release candidates:

The release notes have a detailed list of what’s new in Firefox 2 RC 3, including:

  • A new theme that updates Firefox’s familiar interface
  • Built-in Phishing Protection
  • Enhanced search engine management and search suggestions for Google, Yahoo! and Answers.com
  • Improvements to tabbed browsing, including the ability to re-open recently closed tabs
  • Firefox will resume from where you left off after a system crash or browser restart
  • Better support for previewing and subscribing to Web feeds
  • Inline spell checking in Web forms
  • The ability to create bookmarks with “Live Titles” for Web sites that offer microsummaries
  • New Add-ons manager that simplifies management of extensions and themes.
  • Support for JavaScript 1.7
  • Extended search plug-in format
  • Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
  • Support for client side session and persistent storage
  • Support for SVG text using svg:textPath
  • New Windows installer based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System
