Last Friday a new beta release of version 4.0 of the voip program Gizmo was released. Unlike the logical comparison Skype, which uses a closed source protocol, calls at Gizmo go through the open IETF standard SIP. Other comparisons with Skype do hold; the software is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, but the latter two are slightly behind in development. Furthermore, calls to other Gizmo users are free and calls to a landline or mobile connection can be made for a small fee compensation. The biggest change in version 4.0 is the support for video calls and this release contains several changes and improvements related to video:

Fixes:

  • Hanging up video call intermittently freezes app
  • Presence information not always correct
  • Video on low-end PCs peg CPU usage at 100%
  • Locking issue when stopping/restarting video
  • Screen goes black when in fullscreen mode on video call and other party hangs up
  • Added new incoming call indicator

Improvements:

  • Video preferences have been implemented in Options window
  • Improved Calls Tab
  • Replaced icons on chat window (IM)
  • UI fixes on Call/Video window
  • New graphics throughout client
  • Added tooltips for all buttons
