Codenamed Olympus, the developers of phpBB released the first beta version of the 3.0 series today released, which also marked the start of the development of the new branch of the forum software. phpBB is a free to use forum made available under the GPL license. The forum software is one of the most widely used open source forums and uses PHP and a database program to store, save and retrieve messages. Besides MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Access are also supported as database software. The new 3.0 branch has a number of improvements over the current stable 2.0 series, including improved admin, search capabilities, and a host of other overhauled and new features.
