AOL has released a new tool that allows users to assess their PC’s resistance to viruses, spyware, and outside attacks. This tool is called Active Security Monitor and can be accessed via this link be downloaded as version 1.0.0.231. Active Security Monitor checks whether the computer is equipped with an antivirus and antispyware package, a firewall and the latest security patches. Based on that data, the application spits out a score, which is calculated using an algorithm developed in collaboration with the security company Cybertrust. In addition, the program is able to compare different scores within a home network and thus identify the weakest link. Below is an example of a PC that has been rated ‘good’, even though it lacks a firewall.
