Rumor: Huawei Kirin 9000 is the first 5nm soc with a built-in 5G modem

The Huawei Kirin 9000-soc would be the first 5nm soc with a built-in 5G modem, WinFuture sources claim. TSMC also makes Apple’s A14-soc at 5nm, but it uses an external modem for cellular connections.

Installing the modem reduces energy consumption, which is what many telephone manufacturers prefer. Huawei has not yet announced the Kirin 9000, but wants to do so soon, WinFuture reports. The manufacturer is planning a live stream for the announcement of the Mate 40 Pro in mid-October, which uses the new soc.

The Kirin 9000 is currently the last soc that TSMC produces for Huawei. TSMC has been forced by the US government to discontinue production for Huawei as an extension of the trade ban. TSMC works with American technology and is therefore no longer allowed to deliver to Huawei from this week. The Kirin 9000 would have already been produced in recent months.

Huawei generally presents its new socs in the fall, after which the manufacturer uses them first in its own Mate phones and in the following year also in devices in the P-series and Honor smartphones. Huawei would mainly focus the Mate 40 Pro on its home country China, but the phone would also be released in Europe in the course of next year, WinFuture reports.
