Today the folks at 2K Games released the PC demo of the highly anticipated first-person shooter ‘BioShock’, dubbed by the developers as the ‘spiritual successor’ to System Shock 2. BioShock is set in the civil war-torn, utopian world Rapture, where you end up after your plane crashes into the ocean. The unique thing about the game is that everything can be used as a weapon: freeze opponents and literally smash them to pieces with a pipe wrench, booby-trap a first-aid machine with a bomb or hypnotize opponents and use them as bodyguards. You can also upgrade your body with the help of plasmids and thus eliminate opponents via telekinesis or electroshock.

The demo contains the first 45 minutes of the full game and introduces you to some weapons and upgrades, among other things. The upgrades won’t be available in the full game until later, but are already being used in the demo to give players a taste of the entire game. As of last week, Xbox 360 owners can already download the demo from the Xbox Live Marketplace, while PC gamers had to wait until August 21. Hours before its official release, the PC demo leaked out and was quickly distributed via BitTorrent and newsgroups. Now that the PC demo has been officially released, it can be accessed via Steam, FileFront or GamersHell be brought in as 1.85GB heavy binary.

Don’t forget to install the latest drivers for your video card first.
