Analyst Kuo: Apple will not release iPhones with 120Hz screens until next year
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often releases information about upcoming Apple products based on research, says that Apple will not have 120Hz screens ready for the upcoming iPhone 12 series. That would only happen from next year.
Apple would not support 120Hz for the iPhone 12 models, which could be explained by considerations regarding battery life. MacRumors writes this on the basis of the reports from Ming-Chi Kuo. According to the analyst, the high refresh rate capability of 120Hz will be supported for the first time on iPhones due out next year.
If this information is correct, the screens of the new iPhones smartphones will most likely have a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz. Quite a few Android devices, especially the midrange devices and more expensive models, currently already have the option to have their OLED screens refresh 90 or 120 times per second, so that scrolling or playing games will appear smoother, for example.
Earlier there was a rumor in which it was stated that Apple would be short of driver ICs to make 120Hz possible with the iPhone 12 Pro. The screens that come in the iPhone 12 models would not rule out a refresh rate of 120 frames per second, but the hardware required for the control would be the obstacle, the information said.
Kuo also states that all devices in the iPhone 12 series support 5G, with two versions of each model coming out: a version for 5G frequencies of 6GHz or lower and a version that also supports mmWave frequencies.
The regular models of the new iPhones would be released in October, while the Pro models would follow in November. Apple has confirmed that it will release its iPhones later than usual this year. There is an Apple event on Tuesday evening, but it will probably mainly revolve around new Apple Watch and iPad Air models and the new iPhones will not be discussed yet.
