VMware has acquired DynamicOps, a company that develops software to manage various hypervisors. With the acquisition, VMware also wants to be able to manage competitors’ virtual machines.

DynamicOps’ Cloud Suite management software can handle hypervisors from Xen, KVM and Microsoft’s Hyper-V, among others. In addition, it is able to run virtual machines based on Amazon’s custom Xen version, also known as Amazon Machine Images. This makes it easier for companies to combine private clouds with public cloud environments such as Amazon EC2, a model also known as a hybrid cloud, which is becoming increasingly popular due to its flexibility.

With the takeover of DynamicOps by VMware, with the acquisition amount undisclosed, the company can add to its vSphere and vCenter management software the ability to now also control virtual machines based on other hypervisors. According to Analysts choose the right strategy for VMware as the iaas market is becoming increasingly crowded and fragmented, and there is more money to be made for companies like VMware from other products within the cloud computing market, such as providing management software for ‘multi-cloud’ environments’.
