Samsung makes first 16GB DDR4 modules

Samsung has developed its first DDR4 modules with capacities of 8 and 16GB. The memory branch of the Korean group previously developed a 2GB DDR4 module, but now samples with higher capacities have been developed.

Samsung late know that it produced DDR4 modules of 8GB and 16GB for the first time last month. The modules were produced according to an unspecified 30nm-class process and will work on a supply voltage of 1.2V, which means that according to Samsung, the energy consumption is in some cases 40 percent lower than with DDR3 modules. Mass production of the modules will begin next year.

The samples have already been supplied to major hardware manufacturers. Samsung also indicated that it expects to start producing DDR4 modules next year that function at a speed of 3.2GB/s; the current ddr3 modules operate at 1.6GB/s. In addition, they also want to produce ddr4 modules next year based on the 20nm class process, with capacities up to 32GB.
