GVB is experimenting with free Wi-Fi in trams
The Amsterdam transport company GVB will start a trial next Monday in which one tram has free internet on board. The company is investigating whether all trams, buses, metros and ferries can be equipped with wireless internet.
The tram, which will have Wi-Fi on board from next Monday, will be renamed a ‘Twittertram’, which is labeled with ‘various tweets’. According to the GVB will operate the Wi-Fi tram on various routes in Amsterdam.
It is unknown which provider provides the uplink to the internet. The GVB also does not indicate how long the trial will last, but it does say that it is also investigating whether Wi-Fi can be used in all trams, buses, metros and ferries of the transport company. It is not yet known whether the internet connection will remain free after the trial period.
The GVB is not the first carrier in the Netherlands to equip its vehicles with Wi-Fi: the Dutch Railways have been working on this for two years and Connexxion started a trial last year. This involved a larger number of vehicles, in this case buses, which were equipped with a wireless Internet connection.
