Volkswagen subsidiary Cariad will collaborate with Bosch to develop a platform for autonomous driving. The platform is being developed for the various car brands of the Volkswagen Group.

The two companies announced the collaboration on Tuesday and want to make the first functionalities for autonomous driving available to car brands that fall under the Volkswagen Group by 2023. Initially, these are level 2 autonomy functionalities. This includes driving assistance in and outside built-up areas and on the highway. After that, it should also quickly become possible that the system can largely take over driving when the car is on the highway, which falls under level 3 autonomy.

It is planned that the platform can be used for the vehicles covered by the Volkswagen Group flag from next year. After that, it should also be possible for other car manufacturers to implement this technology in their vehicles. According to the two companies, the team that will work on this technology will consist of about a thousand experts.

Volkswagen has experimented with autonomous vehicles before. In September last year, the company announced another collaboration with Argo AI, with which it is developing a self-driving bus. The ID.Buzz AD1 is planned to be ready for commercial use in 2025.
