Microsoft’s HoloLens would contain an Atom processor of the Cherry Trail generation. Intel has not yet announced this processor, but mass production of the Cherry Trail Atoms is expected to start in early 2015.

During the presentation of the augmented reality glasses, Microsoft announced that the HoloLens contains a holographic processing unit in addition to a CPU and graphics chip. Microsoft did not provide details about the hardware, but a source from PC World claims that the CPU is an unannounced Cherry Trail-Atom.

Cherry Trail is the successor to the current Bay Trail platform. Cherry Trail socks have Airmont instead of Silvermont cores and are produced at 14nm instead of 22nm, which means they have to operate more economically. The GPU would also get a big boost: Intel claims that Cherry Trail’s GPU is twice as powerful as Bay Trail’s.

No details are known about the HPU, which Microsoft described as a “new type” processor. The HoloLens is an augmented reality headset with clear lenses that runs on Windows 10. The headset works autonomously and will probably hit the market around the same time as Windows 10.
