CD Projekt takes over studio of Bioware and Relic veterans
CD Projekt has acquired Canadian game studio Digital Scapes. The Polish company has been working with Digital Scapes since 2018, including on Cyberpunk 2077. The studio also contributed to the development of Dying Light.
In a press release, CD Projekt, the parent company of developer CD Projekt RED, writes that Digital Scapes has made a significant contribution to the development of Cyberpunk 2077 and to the optimization of various features. With the acquisition, CD Projekt RED will have an additional studio in Vancouver with about twelve developers. The studio is now called CD Projekt RED Vancouver.
Founded in 2012 by veterans of BioWare, Radical Entertainment and Relic, Digital Scapes has contributed to the development of Company of Heroes, Dead Rising, Mass Effect and Prototype in addition to Cyberpunk 2077 and Dying Light. The studio will now contribute to the development of new CD Projekt RED titles, the developer says.
It is also a good chance for CD Projekt RED to bring in more development talent. The developer now has game studios in the Polish cities of Wrocław, Krakow and Warsaw. Canada is an important country for the games industry, with studios from EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix and dozens of indie studios, among others. There are 46 studios in Vancouver and nearby Burnaby alone.
On Tuesday, CD Projekt announced its intention to restructure so that it can release several major AAA games and expansions simultaneously in the future. The company will also spend more time developing its REDengine.
