Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 1100 soc for wearables
Qualcomm has announced a new soc for wearables, the Snapdragon 1100. It is intended for small devices, which do not come with a large battery. It is an addition to the Snapdragon 2100, which was presented in February.
Qualcomm indicates that the new soc is intended for watches for children and the elderly, fitness trackers, headsets and other accessories for wearables. This makes it suitable for devices with a narrowly defined purpose and should provide users with longer battery life and extensive connectivity options.
For example, the chip is equipped with a modem with support for 4G and can connect via bluetooth and wifi. It is also 40 percent smaller than the QSC6270 processor and the soc can last up to seven days in ‘lte standby’, according to Engadget. It is also possible for users to determine their location with multi-GNSS and the Snapdragon 1100 is equipped with an integrated processor for Linux applications.
In addition, the chip has a secure environment on board and uses a hardware cryptographic engine. The whole thing runs on an ARM Cortex-A7 processor with a single core, according to an image by Heise.
The chip is now available to customers and is used in more than 100 devices, according to Qualcomm. These are expected early next year.
