GoldenEye 25, the remaster of GoldenEye 007’s campaign for the Nintendo 64, is not coming. The makers have received a cease-and-desist letter and are not allowed to use the James Bond brand name. The makers will continue with the project with the necessary adjustments.

The project’s original Twitter account has since been closed. Just before the closure, the makers indicated that they were kindly requested to stop the development of GoldenEye 25, Eurogamer writes. That request came from the rights holder, MGM / Danjaq. The makers say they always knew this could happen. They indicate that they will comply with the request and thank all those involved for their continued support.

On a new account called Spies Don’t Die explain the developers that they were no longer allowed to use the name GoldenEye or James Bond characters. However, they do not give up: “We take what we made and create an original game.” The makers indicate that they regret this, but they also see positive sides, such as the fact that they can be present on Steam and ports for the consoles are possible.

“We can’t make a Bond game, but we can still make a great game with all the much-loved aspects of our favorite ’90s action shooter,” said the developers. Certain elements can still be used, such as the game code, the weapons, parts of the levels, sound effects and a large library of 3D models and textures. The weapons to get probably their real or fictional names.

GoldenEye 25 had been in development for a few years. The remaster of the single player campaign is based on the Unreal Engine 4 and should have been completed by August 2022. That release period was no coincidence: the original GoldenEye 007 is then 25 years old.

Incidentally, there are more similar GoldenEye projects that are still running or already exist, such as a mod of GoldenEye 007 in vr, which is being developed by Half-Life: Alyx mod makers. In addition, there is GoldenEye Source, a remake of the multiplayer part.
