The largest energy storage in Europe using battery technology is reported to have opened in the United Kingdom on Monday. The capacity of the installation is 10MWh, considerably more than another large power plant that opened in Germany earlier this year.

The battery at the Woodman Close power station in the British town of Leighton Buzzard opened Monday for a two-year trial period. The storage covers a total area of three tennis courts and the building is 760 square meters in size.

According to the BBC, the power station can store enough energy to power 6,000 homes for an hour and a half during peak loads. In addition, Woodman Close can provide power to 1,100 homes throughout the day during average hours and during off-peak hours, the broadcaster writes.

With the storage, the British UK Power Networks mainly wants to reduce peak loads. This is becoming a major problem in societies that require more energy due to an increasing number of electrical appliances. According to UK Power Networks, the benefits of energy storage in the UK could reach £600m by 2040, provided batteries are deployed across the country.

As far as is known, the installation in the United Kingdom is the largest in Europe in terms of capacity. In September this year, a German energy company opened a storage facility with a capacity of 5MWh. The Germans temporarily store surplus green energy in this, which comes from windmills and solar panels.
