HTC says it will show its first wearable at CES next month. Although the company first worked on a smartwatch, the final product is not a smart watch. What it is, HTC won’t say.

HTC will show the wearable at CES electronics fair, early January in Las Vegas. The ‘official launch’, by which it presumably means the start of sales, will follow later, the Taiwanese manufacturer tells Venturebeat.

The manufacturer had a smartwatch in development for a long time, which was planned for release this fall. However, HTC has canceled the introduction of the watch. In previous interviews, top executives at the manufacturer said the company would focus on battery life when developing wearables, as it sees it as the biggest problem facing current-generation products. Many smartwatches last one to two days, with the exception of devices like the Pebble, which lasts five to seven days thanks to its economical screen technology.

HTC keeps to itself what the wearable is exactly, but says that it is not a smartwatch. What it is remains unclear. In recent years, various non-watch wearables worn on the wrist have appeared, such as sports bracelets without a screen and intermediate forms such as the Microsoft Band and Samsung Gear Fit.

HTC’s latest product that isn’t a phone or tablet: the RE camera.
