Dovetail Games has announced Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. The simulation game will be released for Windows on December 18 and a possible retail price has not yet been mentioned by the developer.

The Steam Edition of the game is based on Flight Simulator X from 2006. Dovetail Games writes that the multiplayer functionality has been examined and the game could also work with Windows 8.1. All in all, more than 24,000 airports can be visited and in the flight simulation game, players can choose from more than twenty aircraft. For example, you can opt for a commercial aircraft, a jet fighter, but also a helicopter.

In total, gamers can play more than eighty missions in which they are tested in different ways. For example, the goal can be to search for and rescue victims, make test flights or do races. New content for the game would be released at a later stage.

The developer is known for the Train Simulator series. Earlier this year, Dovetail Games concluded an agreement with Microsoft, whereby they acquired the license of the flight simulation game. In addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition, Dovetail Games is working on its own titles based on Microsoft’s flight simulation technology.

Microsoft closed the doors of game development studio ACES in 2009. This was the result of a staff reduction that was implemented throughout the company. Only six full-time employees remained and they worked on Flight Simulator ESP, the commercial application development platform based on Flight Simulator X.
