‘Facebook is working on a business variant’

Facebook is working on a business version of its service where users can collaborate on documents and chat with colleagues, a British newspaper reports. The service is already being tested at some companies and the introduction is closer, according to the newspaper.

Employees with the service could also come into contact with business contacts, writes the Financial Times. The site would resemble the current Facebook service and will be known as Facebook at Work for the time being. However, users’ business accounts would be kept completely separate from their private accounts. With the business site, Facebook would compete with LinkedIn, but also with the business internet services of Google and Microsoft. It is not clear when the new Facebook service will come, but according to the Financial Times, the introduction is getting closer.

Facebook wouldn’t plan to charge for the service, at least not for its launch. The newspaper notes that the service can ensure that employees who are now prohibited from logging into Facebook during working hours can visit the site again.
