DICE gets parts of Battlefield 4 working on iOS
DICE got the PC version of Battlefield 4 working on iOS. This is a demonstration for now. The developers of the Frostbite engine emphasize that they want to see what Apple’s game development platform Metal is capable of with the demo.
The development of games for mobile devices is no different than for consoles, for example, says DICE. In the past, however, it was a challenge to develop games for the iPhone or iPad, for example, because the hardware could not be used optimally. As a result, there were fewer objects or their quality was not as good.
“This changed when Apple introduced its new Metal API, which helped us make the most of the hardware,” DICE wrote on its blog. The developer has ported parts of Battlefield 4 to iOS and says the results so far have not been disappointing. DICE posted a few screenshots as proof online.
DICE is not releasing much further, but says it will report more about iOS development in the future. “There’s still a lot to do, but we’re very happy with the results so far. It’s a great feeling to port the system, get it up and running and discover that performance is still possible.”
