Rumor: Google postponed Android 5.0 update due to battery life problem

According to a new rumor, Google has delayed the Android 5.0 update for Nexus devices from last year and older, such as the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, because the battery would drain too quickly. The cause would be a bug related to the WiFi connection.

The bug, discussed by engineers on the Android Developer Preview site, means the Wi-Fi connection sends interruption requests to the processor, draining the battery much faster than usual. Google acknowledged the bug on Wednesday and the problem has since been resolved, according to the bug tracker.

According to Android Police, this bug could be the reason why Google hasn’t released the Android 5.0 update for the Nexus devices yet, even though the Nexus 9 tablet hit the market on Monday. The update should now be released next Wednesday.

Google announced Android 5.0 as Android L in June and provided more details last month. With the new version of the operating system, Android gets many new features and functions, such as notifications on the lockscreen and a design that Google describes as ‘material design’. Google has already updated many apps with that ‘material design’ in recent weeks, such as the Play Store, Calendar, Maps and Gmail. Android 5.0 is out for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 7 (2013), and Nexus 10.
