Amnesty International displays anti-censorship messages to AdBlock users
Amnesty International shows banners to Adblock users on Saturday as part of the World Day Against Cyber Censorship. Adblocks blocked by Adblock will be replaced by Amnesty International’s messages on this day.
Amnesty International announces the partnership with Adblock on its website. The messages shown to Adblock users come from activists such as Edward Snowden, Ai Weiwei and Pussy Riot. The promotion lasts all day and affects all 50 million users of Adblock. The banners contain texts such as “even if you do nothing wrong, you will still be monitored and registered.” Amnesty International wants to make the world’s population aware of threats to online privacy and freedom that they can be just as dangerous as similar threats in the real world.
It is not uncommon for Adblock users to see certain messages despite the intent of the software. Adblock uses a list of acceptable internet advertisements, which is managed by a committee of the German Eyeo, which in turn is behind Adblock Plus. Companies like Taboola and Google pay Eyeo for their place on that list. However, users can still disable these ‘non-intrusive ads’ in Adblock’s options menu. There is also an option today for those who wish to disable the Amnesty International banners. It appears that Adblock is placing Amnesty International’s banners free of charge.
