Sony patents glove that works as a game controller
Sony has applied for three patents on an idea to turn a glove into a controller. By providing these with sensors, the input of the glove could be used in virtual reality gaming.
The patent applications in question were filed with the US patent office USPTO in 2014, but have only recently been published. That’s what a user of the NeoGaf forum discovered. It is clear from the patent applications that the glove system is equipped with sensors that can track the movements of fingers, so-called flex sensors. Finger gestures can then be linked to actions in virtual reality, such as holding an object or firing a gun.
Sony also mentions a number of other actions that become possible with the glove, such as pressing on objects, moving objects and throwing objects away. The images released with the patent applications show that Sony mainly sees applications in combination with its VR system PlayStation VR. However, the company also states that a combination with consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 is possible.
Although Sony is toying with the idea of turning a glove into a controller, it cannot be said that the product will actually come on the market. It happens more often that ideas are patented that then do not appear as products in the shops.
