General Motors comes with the Cadillac CT6 and equips the car with an LCD rear-view mirror. The US Secretary of Transportation has approved the use of the technology in traffic.

The mirror in question is both an ordinary mirror and an LCD and the driver can choose which option he wants to use. In digital display, the LCD shows what’s happening behind the car thanks to a camera mounted on the rear of the roof. Anthony Foxx, the US Secretary of Transportation, said in an interview with national public radio that permission has been given for the use of the mirror. The permission would have been given because the mirror can still be an ordinary mirror despite its function as an LCD.

The LCD mirror is developed by Gentex. The company calls the rear-view mirror a Full Display Mirror. Gentex claims that the camera can show a three to four times wider image than the normal mirror. The mirror has a resolution of 1280×240 pixels and has a pixel density of 171 ppi.

Gentex has been developing the LCD mirror since 2014. For use in cars, the permission of the Ministry of Transport was required. The company already sold a Rear Blind Zone Assist module, which shows the blind spot in a small LCD integrated into a regular mirror.

The mirror is currently only available as an option in the Cadillac CT6. The Enhanced Vision and Comfort package costs converted $ 2025 and in addition to the mirror also includes a special sunroof, ventilation for the passenger and heated rear seats. Later, the mirror should also find its way to the Cadillac XT5 and the Chevrolet Bolt.
