Instagram is going to introduce two-factor authentication
Instagram confirms that the social network will introduce two-factor authentication. Currently, the extra security layer is already being tested. It is not yet known when all 400 million users will be able to activate the feature.
The arrival of two-factor authentication has been confirmed by Instagram to TechCrunch. Until now, it is not possible to log in to Instagram with an extra security, in addition to the password of your choice. The social network suffers a lot from spam and Instagram accounts with many followers are an interesting prey for hackers, because such an account can reach a large number of people.
Breaking into Instagram accounts is relatively easy as there is no extra layer of security besides username and password. In November, for example, it turned out that a popular app for Android and iOS was stealing passwords from users. The app claimed to show users who views their Instagram photos, but in the meantime sent the login details to a different server. Users had to give the app access to their Instagram account and the service warns in its guidelines not to do this.
With the advent of two-step authentication, users are protected against such account theft, because each login attempt also requires a code to be entered, which is sent to the user by SMS. Some users already see the option to activate the function in the app’s menu. Instagram has not yet released the news itself and it is not known when all users will be able to enable the security layer.
