Rumor: Huawei P40 Pro has telephoto camera with ’10x zoom’
The Huawei P40 Pro, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities, has a camera with periscopic telephoto lens that allows 10x zoom compared to the primary camera. The current P30 Pro has a telephoto lens with ‘5x zoom’.
The 8-megapixel camera has a lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of around 260mm, according to a report that MacRumors has seen. This allows around 10x zoom compared to the primary camera, which in smartphones has a focal length between 24 and 28mm in 35mm equivalent.
It is a camera with f/4.0 aperture, according to the information from Kuo that appeared on Sina. This makes the lens opening relatively small: the primary camera of smartphones is usually around f/1.7, the second and third cameras often around f/2.4. In addition, the info makes it clear that one of the lens elements will be made of glass, where it is usually plastic with smartphones. It is a camera with a periscopic lens; a mirror deflects the incoming light at an angle of ninety degrees. As a result, the focal length can be longer as the thickness of the phone is no longer a limitation.
The P40 Pro will get the periscopic camera with 10x zoom, but cheaper models will get the camera with 5x zoom that is now on the P30 Pro, according to Kuo. Huawei generally presents the P models in March. As it stands, there are no Google services on the new smartphones. Due to the US government’s trade ban on US companies to trade with Huawei, Google is not allowed to provide the Chinese manufacturer with approval and Google services for new smartphones.
Kuo is known for making accurate predictions about Apple hardware. He has made few predictions about phones from other manufacturers that have come into the public eye. Much of his information about Apple products turned out to be correct. Renders of the P40 Pro have recently come out.
