Star Citizen has raised more than $400 million
Cloud Imperium Games has broken the $400 million mark with its crowdfunding campaign for the development of Star Citizen. The game has been in the works since 2012. About $50 million was added in eight months.
At the time of writing, the counter stands at $402,906,370. That money was invested by 3,365,885 so-called Star Citizens, people who have spent money on, for example, virtual spaceships for the game.
The $350 million barrier was broken in mid-March. In the past eight months, the committed amount has therefore increased by $50 million. That was slightly faster than the previous $50 million, which took nine months. Developer Cloud Imperium Games also has more money at its disposal. In addition to crowdfunding, there are private investors, but it is not known exactly how many they have invested in the project.
Star Citizen has been in the works since 2012, and while parts are playable, there’s no end in sight for development. Earlier this month, the developer said it plans to relocate its studio and nearly double its workforce by 2026. The number of developers should grow from the current 700 to 1,300.
Portions of Star Citizen’s multiplayer portion are playable in early access. According to a roadmap, alpha version 3.16 should be released by the end of this year, followed by 3.17 in the first quarter of 2022. Version 3.18 may be released a quarter later. A single player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in the works, but no release date has been announced at this time. Squadron 42 should have been released in 2016, but has been postponed several times.
