Rumor: AMD uses both Zen 2 and Zen 3 cores for Ryzen 5000U APUs
The alleged specifications of six Ryzen 5000U laptop APUs have been put online. AMD would base three of them on the Zen 2 architecture and three on Zen 3. The Ryzen 5000U variants would all get smt and be clocked higher than their predecessors.
The Ryzen 7 5800U gets Zen 3 cores and gets up to 4.4GHz, while the Ryzen 7 5700U is based on the Zen 2 architecture and gets a boost speed up to 4.3GHz, claims Twitter user ExecutableFix. There is also a difference of 200MHz in the speed of the baseclock and the GPU is 100MHz faster with the top model. Similar differences exist with the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 models, of which Zen 3 variants and Zen 2 versions are said to exist.
All Ryzen 5000U APUs would get smt. The current Ryzen 4000U series has Ryzen 7, 5 and 3 variants with and without SMT. That distinction would lapse, but the distinction would be in the architecture of the new series. AMD would code the Zen 3 APUs Cezanne and call the Zen 2 variants Lucienne. The Zen 2 APUs are basically a refresh of the Ryzen 4000U variants, with slightly higher clock speeds.
AMD again uses Vega GPUs in its APUs. The number of GPU cores is unchanged from the previous generation, but the clock speeds are slightly higher. According to the rumors, the new processors will again get a tdp of 15W and manufacturers can also set other tdp configurations between 10W and 25W.
In addition to alleged specifications, the user also mentions the OPN numbers under which the CPUs would be known. Those numbers have not been mentioned before. It is not clear where the information comes from and how reliable it is. ExecutableFix has often posted details about new AMD hardware on Twitter.
How the difference in Ryzen 5000U apus with Zen 2 and Zen 3 cores will manifest itself in practice is not yet known. The difference in clock speed is relatively small, but the Zen 3 architecture also has a better IPC, so the difference can be larger in practice. According to AMD, the Zen 3 cores per clock tick are up to 19 percent faster than Zen 2 cores.
AMD presented the Zen 3 architecture earlier this month. The new CPU cores make their debut in the Ryzen 5000 processors for desktops and are again made at 7nm. Officially, AMD has not yet released anything about Ryzen 5000U laptop processors. They are rumored to be announced early next year.
