Rumor: AMD is working on 20nm processor for Xbox One
AMD is working on a 20nm variant of the 28nm apu in the Xbox One, according to an employee’s LinkedIn profile. The information on the LinkedIn profile leads to a lot of speculation about a possible new version of the Microsoft console.
The smaller processor, which AMD employee Daniel McConnell mentions on his profile, results in a 30 percent speed increase or 25 percent energy savings, according to TSMC. The new apu could also reduce production costs due to its smaller size.
It is unknown what Microsoft wants to do with the 20nm apu. It is obvious that Microsoft wants to use the processor for a variant of the Xbox One, with some media such as Eurogamer speculating that it will be a smaller and cheaper console. However, the Redmond-based company has not yet confirmed anything. It is also unclear when the new version of the Xbox One can be released.
