Apple is considering launching a rugged version of its Apple Watch for use under more extreme conditions. This one would have more rubber in the housing to be more resistant to damage.

That writes financial news agency Bloomberg based on sources familiar with the matter. This variant of the Apple Watch would have the same functionality as a regular Apple Watch, with a simply more resistant exterior. As for the fitness functionalities, he wouldn’t get anything extra on board; The Watch already has those features and Apple is basically constantly adding new features regarding sports and health.

Bloomberg compares the extra protection this Apple Watch would get with that of Casio’s G-Shock watches. The Apple Watch itself also has quite a bit of protection against the elements. The timepiece is water resistant up to 50 meters and to some extent also dust resistant.

The variant is internally called the ‘Explorer Edition’, but that name is not fixed. Apple has been considering launching this variant since 2015, the year of the first Apple Watch.
