Twitter cancels developer conference, may announce layoffs soon
Twitter has canceled its Chirp developer conference. The company has announced that. The conference was scheduled for two weeks. In addition, the company would let employees know on Monday who will be fired.
Twitter gives no reason for canceling the conference, which was scheduled to take place on November 16. The company says it is working on new features, including for developers. “We’ve decided to cancel Chirp as we build new stuff that we want to share with you soon.”
In the meantime, the company is in the process of a major layoff. Twitter already wanted to lay off some of its staff before Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced it was buying the platform. The takeover has now been completed. Employees were expected to hear more on Monday. According to employees who spoke to The Verge it may be about half the staff, about 3800 people. Musk would also like to have all employees back in the office: Twitter now works with a policy that anyone can work from any location.
The layoff is no surprise. The company is undergoing rapid change under Musk. The new CEO fired the board of directors. In addition, he would like free users to get the edit button, while the checkmark for verification becomes part of the subscription. There should also be a supervisory board for moderation decisions. Musk has been the owner of Twitter since last week.
