Netflix wants an end to account sharing, but how and why now?
Netflix has announced it will begin tackling account sharing next year. It is now more clear about how the company wants to do this. It is also obvious that the company is starting to do just that.
Netflix calls it ‘password sharing’, the sharing of your password. Many people share their Netflix account with others from different households and thus share the costs. For years, the streaming service was fine with that. Officially it was not allowed, but Netflix did nothing about it. That will change from next year; then Netflix will address users who do that individually and try to convert them into individually paying customers. According to Netflix, there are 100 million people worldwide who watch Netflix through a shared account, while there are around 220 million Netflix subscribers.
