Meta tests 3D avatars in WhatsApp beta
Some Android users running WhatsApp beta have been given the option to create 3D avatars. These avatars can be used while chatting, or as a profile picture on the messaging platform.
WAbetainfo reports that the feature is in WhatsApp beta version 2.22.23.8 and 2.22.23.9 for Android. The feature would not be active on all users. For users for whom the function is active, there is a new option in the Settings menu to create a 3D avatar.
Once the avatar is created, WhatsApp creates a sticker pack based on the avatar that can be used during conversations, according to WAbetainfo. The avatar can also be set as a profile picture. It is not clear when an official release will follow. Meta already introduced 3D avatars in Instagram, Facebook and Messenger at the beginning of 2022. The 3D avatars fit in with Meta’s ambitions to develop the next evolution of the internet in the long term, the so-called ‘metaverse’.
