Smart provides business Optimus SSDs with 1.6TB storage capacity

The company Smart Modular Technologies has announced a solid state drive for the business market that offers a storage capacity of up to 1.6TB within a 2.5″ housing. The Optimus SSDs are said to achieve read speeds of up to 1GBps.

Smart states that his Optimus SSDs will be available in versions with storage capacities of 200GB, 400GB, 800GB and 1.6TB. MLC flash chips are used for this. According to the manufacturer, the Optimus SSDs can achieve throughput speeds of up to 1GBps for sequential reads and 500MBps for writes. For this, the solid state drive must be connected via the two 6Gbps full duplex SAS interfaces; a sata connection is not available.

The Optimus intended for server applications would achieve 100,000 iops with random reads, while a maximum of 50,000 iops would be achievable with writes. The SSD uses an unspecified controller that, according to Smart, has various mechanisms to protect the stored data against data loss.

The consumption of the SSD is 7W. Smart gives a five-year warranty on its Optimus SSDs. Prices for the various models have not yet been released.
