RAR Labs has released the sixth beta release of version 5.00 of its RAR and WinRAR archiving tools. The popular compression tool is available for a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and OS X. The program handles most common formats – including rar, zip, cab, arj, lzh, tar, gz, ace, uue, bz2, jar, iso, 7z and z – has a customizable interface, and support for Zip64 and multivolume cab files. The main change in version 5.00 is the introduction of a new compression format. This format, dubbed rar 5.0, generally produces smaller archives, but at the expense of speed. The following issue has also been fixed in beta:

• Fixed a bug in recovery record generation in RAR 5.0 archive format.
  Under certain circumstances previous beta versions could produce wrong recovery record data, inefficient to repair a corrupt archive. Such invalid recovery record can be identified with “Test” command, which issues “Recovery record is corrupt” warning for it.
