LG will introduce the LEX8 LCD TV at the upcoming IFA trade show in Berlin. This 3D TV is equipped with a new type of LED backlight behind the panel, making the TV only 8.8 mm thin. The company is also showing the prototype of a 180-inch plasma TV.

LG calls its new backlight system NANO Lighting Technology. This system consists of a maxtrix of LEDs behind the panel, also known as ‘full LED’ backlight, with a film layer with tiny dots over it, which according to LG spreads the light more evenly. By using this technology, the thickness of the LEX8 is only 8.8mm. Despite its small thickness, local dimming is possible, but LG has not yet disclosed how many LEDs are located behind the panel and in how many dimmable zones these LEDs are divided.

The LEX8 has a bezel width of 1.25 cm, uses LG’s TruMotion 400Hz motion compensation and supports the display of 3D content. The TV has two 7W speakers incorporated into the housing, supports DLNA and uses LG’s remote with motion sensor for operation.

It is not known whether the LEX8, like the current LE8500, is equipped with a glass plate on the front, but LG does at least mention an anti-reflective coating on the panel. Most of the electronics are probably, just like the C9000, Samsung’s top model, incorporated in the foot of the LEX8.

Little is known about the LEX9 other than that it will be the first LCD TV in the world to be available in a 72″ version. The LEX9-3d TV is also equipped with TruMotion 400Hz technology. The LX9500 LCD TV is also shown, but that 3D TV had already been introduced at the CES fair early this year.

LG will also be prototyping at the IFA fair in Berlin, which will take place between September 3 and 8. to show of a 3D plasma TV with a screen diagonal of 180″. That makes it 28″ larger than the current 152″ plasma TV from Panasonic. LG has not yet released any footage of this plasma behemoth.

The new PX950N is not only LG’s first 3D plasma TV, but according to the Korean manufacturer is the first TV to receive the 3D THX certification. For 2D display, most LG TVs already had a normal THX label. Cameras with a 3D capability, such as the Sony NEX3 and NEX5, can be connected to the TV to display the 3D images.

In addition, LG will introduce a number of new sound systems at IFA, a soundbar with 3D Blu-ray and 4.1-channel sound, and three new 3D Blu-ray players.
