Qualcomm has announced its Snapdragon 865. The soc does not have an integrated 5g modem, but can be combined with a separate 5g modem. Qualcomm also presents the Snapdragon 765, a midrange model that does contain a 5g modem.

Qualcomm does present the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform as a 5g platform. However, that consists of a soc with a separate 5g modem. In this way, the current Snapdragon 855 can also be equipped with a 5G modem. Qualcomm combines the Snapdragon 865 with the X55 modem. That modem was already announced at the beginning of this year.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 865 contains an image signal processor that can process two gigapixels per second. That allows recording 8k video at 30fps. The isp can control cameras with a resolution of up to 200 megapixels. Qualcomm also claims that the GPU of the new soc is 25 percent faster than its predecessor.

The Snapdragon 765 and 765G will get an integrated 5G modem, but the exact details have not yet been announced. It is not clear on which frequencies the socs support 5g. Qualcomm has not yet announced other details about the construction of the new socs. The manufacturer will tell more about this during its Tech Summit in the coming days.

Samsung also does not provide its latest high-end soc with an integrated 5G modem, but does so with a lower-positioned chip. The Exynos 990 is Samsung’s top model for next year, without a 5g modem. The Exynos 980 does have an integrated 5G modem.

Current socs with integrated 5g modem only support 5g to a limited extent. Both MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 and Samsung’s Exynos 980 can only handle 5g on frequencies lower than 6GHz. There are no socs with a built-in modem that also support 5g on the high mmWave frequencies.

Qualcomm also presents the X52 modem, as a cheaper alternative to the X55. The new variant also supports 5G on low and high frequencies, but does so with a maximum speed of 3.7Gbit/s. The more expensive top model goes up to 7Gbit/s.

During the keynote of the Qualcomm Tech Summit, Xiaomi said that the upcoming Mi 10 smartphone will be equipped with the Snapdragon 865. However, the manufacturer did not give more details about that device yet. An announcement would follow shortly.
