Microsoft blocks Windows upgrades on computers with old version Avast or AVG
Microsoft no longer sends the upgrades to Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909 to computers that have an old version of antivirus software Avast or AVG. Users need to upgrade that software in order to install the Windows updates.
According to Microsoft, there is a compatibility issue between certain versions of Avast Antivirus and AVG Antivirus, and the Windows 10 updates. The companies do not say exactly what the technical cause is. This concerns all software that uses Antivirus version 19.5.444.567 or older. That software came out in May.
Users must uninstall or update the antivirus software before they can install the Windows updates. These are versions 1903 and 1909 of Windows 10 for home users, and Windows Server. The Windows Update tool will notify users if the old software is present. Support pages with information for users have been placed on the Avast and AVG websites.
